Whether you’re already working in journalism or just starting out, here is a guide to organisations and resources supporting journalists in their careers.

There are so many organisations and resources out there to support journalists at every stage in their careers. You just have to know where to look…

Creative Access 

Creative Access is a network to support people in under-represented groups who experience barriers to employment. They work with companies to diversify their talent pools and create inclusive workplaces.

First Draft News 

First Draft News is a non-profit organisation which provides training for journalists on how they can tackle misinformation in newsrooms, including resource packs, webinars and online training courses.

Journalism Diversity Fund 

The JDF provides bursaries for people from diverse backgrounds to do NCTJ courses, covering course fees and/or living expenses. JDF recipients are paired with a working journalist to mentor them throughout their studies.

The NCTJ also run the Thomas Read bursary, which is awarded each year to a JDF applicant who has a long-term illness, health problem or disability. The award winner receives course funding and a work experience opportunity at Sky Sports News.

Journalists’ Charity 

The Journalists’ Charity has been helping journalists for over 150 years, having been set up by Charles Dickens in 1864.

They provide support for journalists on everything from mental health to financial difficulties, and have recently set up a First Jobs Fund to help journalists struggling with essential costs when starting their careers.

Journo Resources 

Journo Resources is a trusted name among journalists at every stage of their career. They have guidance on pitching, finance and jobs on their website, and their weekly newsletter sends some of the best media industry opportunities straight to your inbox.

Media Trust 

Media Trust works in partnership with the media and creative industry to give marginalised groups and young people a stronger voice, running programmes for young people wanting to break into journalism.

PressPad 

PressPad is an award-winning social enterprise which links young people with work experience in London with experienced journalists who can offer a spare room.

They also run intern networks so mentees and mentors can learn from each other and make connections in the industry.           

Sports Journalists’ Association 

The SJA is a national association run by sports journalists for sports journalists. Formed in a pub off Fleet Street in 1948, it has since supported journalists with career advice, events, and networking opportunities, as well as celebrating the success of sports writers at their annual British Sports Journalism Awards.

They also run the SJA Academy, which provides opportunities for those working in student media and on undergraduate or postgraduate journalism courses.

Student Publication Association 

SPA is the UK’s largest student media association, made up of more than 100 publications. It is free to join for student journalists and publications in Higher Education.

As well as providing support and training materials to student media teams, SPA also runs national and regional awards to celebrate the achievements of student journalists across the country.

Women in Journalism 

Women in Journalism is a media networking, campaigning and training organisation which offers guidance and support for women working at every stage in their careers in print, broadcast and online.

They run a mentoring scheme and an award for digital innovation, as well as conducting research into equality in journalism.
