News Associates launches 2024 editorial leadership course

Applications are now open for our free student media editorial leadership course which will run for four weeknights in November.

Our fifth student media editorial leadership course will run every Monday evening 6:30pm-8pm in November remotely on Zoom.

We welcome applications from final year students who hold a position in any student media organisation, whether that be TV, radio or a student newspaper.

The course will include sessions which cover how student media groups feature in the wider media landscape, story sourcing, media law and journalism ethics, office politics, and what it is like to run a national media organisation.

There will also be a series of guest speakers who can offer insights into their roles as well as answering any questions you might have. Previous speakers have included Mhari Aurora (Sky News, previously The Times), Abbie Scott (Financial Times) and Meghna Amin (The Metro).

We love student media and always look forward to seeing those involved produce some amazing pieces of work and support their teams throughout the remainder of the academic year.

Applications close at midnight on Sunday October 13 and we will get back to you by 5pm on Friday 18 October.

Underneath, there is an orange box which includes the script ‘Free remote course delivered by our award-winning team alongside special guests in the industry’. At the bottom of the graphic, there is another cream box and in navy text it reads ‘Every Monday in November 2024, 6:30pm-8pm, on Zoom’. In the top left corner there is a blue box with the News Associates logo in white. As a background behind the boxes, there is a picture of two hands hovering over a keyboard.

The remote course will be delivered by News Associates tutors who have experience at national organisations and teaching the next generation of journalists.

Sessions will be applicable to students from any student media group whether that be TV, radio or a print publication.

There will also be opportunities to gain insights and network with other aspiring journalists on the course and experts from across the industry.

Having launched the first course in March 2021, News Associates has continued to support student media in any way we can, providing bespoke workshops to individual groups and giving advice and support to organisations such as the Student Publication Association.

On the right side of the graphic is a photo of Lucy, a woman with blonde hair wearing a white coat and blue skirt. She is standing in front of Broadcasting House and the BBC logo is visible above her head. On the left side is a blue background with white text that reads: ‘“The student media editorial leadership course at News Associates was invaluable for my time as the editor of my university magazine. Learning about the IPSO code gave me the confidence to write accurate news articles and the fantastic career advice helped me get onto a journalism trainee scheme at the BBC!” – Lucy Acheson, BBC trainee journalist’.

Important information

Sessions will take place on every Monday evening in November from 6.30pm-8pm via Zoom. Please ensure you can attend every week if you apply.

The course is only open to final year students who hold a position at their student media group. We will only be able to accept a maximum of two people per student media group, but anyone is welcome to apply.

There is no pre-reading or marked assessments as part of the course and you will not be expected to do any work outside of these hours.

The short course is not a substitute for formal journalism training but will look great on course and job applications in the future.

If you have any questions about the application or any accessibility needs we can support you with throughout the application process, please contact Gracie Daw on gdaw@newsassociates.co.uk
