News Associates managing editor James Toney said: “It’s always great to see the amazing achievements of our journalists again recognised by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.
“I am hugely proud of all our trainees who strive for the extremely tough gold standard qualification. And we love nothing more than hearing their success stories.
“Finally, I think I join all our graduates in thanking Rachel Bull and her training teams in London and Manchester for the hard work and dedication.”
Anna Schaverien’s stunning exam results, including 120wpm shorthand, earned her the prestigious NCTJ Student Journalist of the Year crown – beating more than 1,500 others from accredited courses across the UK.
Anna follows in a line of News Associates graduates taking home this accolade, including Sara Oldfield in 2016 and George Gigney in 2015.
Neil Athey beat off competition from Joe Middleton and Samar Maguire in an all-News Associates tie for Trainee News Journalist of the Year.
And Katie Falkingham won NCTJ Trainee Sports Journalist of the Year, the second year in a row a News Associates graduate has won the prize.
