News Associates shortlisted for Educational Institute of the Year at Sport Industry Awards

News Associates and Sportsbeat are shortlisted for Educational Institute of the Year at the Sport Industry Awards 2025.

The FEVO Sport Industry Awards celebrate the immense work carried out within the sector, and this year sees the introduction of the inaugural Sport Industry Pre-Awards to shine a light on corners of the industry that the Awards have not championed before – including Educational Institute of the Year.

Nominations were open to any education provider that delivers a curriculum relating to sport.

News Associates and Sportsbeat deliver multi-award-winning, NCTJ-accredited multimedia sports journalism courses.

Recent extensive industry research led to reimagining our courses to include more broadcast and data journalism skills, alongside essential sports reporting, digital journalism and legal and ethical training.

From 2022-23 to 2023-24 our intake grew by 12%, the percentage of students benefiting from diversity bursaries grew by 81% and the percentage of female sports journalism trainees increased by 60%.

Exam results are high, with 96% achieving the NCTJ diploma in both years.

News Associates is the only NCTJ-accredited centre on the shortlist.

17 of our graduates are shortlisted in the NCTJ Awards for Excellence 2024, with our alumni appearing in every journalism category of the awards – news, sport, top scoop, features, podcast, data and videojournalism, plus in the equality, diversity and inclusion award (individual) shortlist.

Three fantastic News Associates graduates are named on the NCTJ Student of the Year 2024 shortlist, including Ben Coneybeare, who trained on our sports journalism course in London. The award celebrates the students who achieved the highest marks in their NCTJ in Diploma in Journalism exams in the 2023/24 academic year.

Elsewhere, Sportsbeat also made The Sports Journalists’ Association British Sports Journalism Awards Content Agency shortlist.

At News Associates we invest in outreach and inclusivity, consistently delivering free journalism events and committing to diversity programmes.

Our brand is a hallmark of excellence across the media industry. Our graduates work everywhere from Sky Sports to The Athletic, Global to TNT Sports. They’re reporters, producers, presenters, content creators and more.

We work with organisations including the Sports Journalists’ Association, the Black Collective of Media in Sport and News UK.

The training at News Associates gave me the skills and confidence to thrive in a fast-paced newsroom environment. I now cover football full-time, which I’m loving!"

Beat Media Group managing editor James Toney said: “The Sport Industry Awards are the Oscars of the sports industry, so for News Associates’ award-winning courses to be recognised in this way is a remarkable achievement.

“Allying our training, with a highly-practical approach to best practice from our Sportsbeat colleagues, working across some of the biggest accounts in sports and media, is the reason why this course has contributed so many leaders to the industry, who are also recognised across other shortlists.”

News Associates editorial development director Lucy Dyer said: “We are thrilled our sports journalism courses are being recognised in the wider industry, alongside Sportsbeat.

“Our trainees and tutors work incredibly hard to stay at the forefront of the fast-moving world of sports media and we are so proud to be shortlisted for this prestigious award.”
