Global Academy partners with News Associates to deliver journalism course
The Global Academy and News Associates have teamed up to offer a journalism qualification to 16-18-year-old students.
The Global Academy aims to prepare young people for life in the creative media industry. The unique school for students in Year 10-13 (and beyond) specialises in the fast-paced, ever-expanding creative industry.
News Associates and the Global Academy share a similar vision – teaching the practical skills to be ready for life in the sector.
The Global Academy launched a new journalism course for sixth form students commencing this academic year (2023/2024).
During the course students will study for a Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Journalism qualification accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists and delivered by News Associates and the Global Academy. Alongside also obtaining a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (Journalism).
This course could support students going directly into BA (Hons) Journalism or Digital Journalism courses at university – as well as straight into an apprenticeship and/or the Level 5 Diploma in Journalism. News Associates delivers an NCTJ-accredited BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism degree, which includes the Level 5 Diploma in Journalism – The School of Journalism.
As part of the two-year course, News Associates’ expert tutors will be delivering all five of the mandatory modules of the Certificate in Foundation Journalism qualification and two optional modules.
These include ‘writing for digital media’, ‘legal and ethical considerations for journalists’, ‘how to tell a news story’ and ‘data journalism’.
News Associates will deliver sessions at the Global Academy in Hayes as well as hosting students for a week-long series of masterclasses at our newsroom in Twickenham.
News Associates editorial development director Lucy Dyer said: “We’ve really enjoyed working with the Global Academy over the last few months and cannot wait to start working with their students properly. I was blown away when I first visited the premises – not only by the amazing facilities but by the confidence and politeness of their students.
“It’s so great the Global Academy has launched this course with the NCTJ level 3 qualification – they are really setting up their students to succeed in the industry.”
Global Academy director of specialism Jonathan Jacob said: “We are delighted to be working with News Associates on this unique partnership to offer an industry-standard approach to our brand new journalism course. The mix of hands-on training and experience offered through the partnership will really set up our young learners as the journalists of the future!”
