UK ranked 20th on press freedom league table

By Andrew Moorhouse, Head of Journalism

WANT to be a journalist? Well you’d be better off living in Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, according to Reporters Sans Frontieres.

The organisation today released their annual world press freedom index and the news is good and bad for British journalists.

Last year the United Kingdom ranked 23rd, alongside Hungary and Namibia, 12 months on and we’re on the rise – inching into the top 20.

Reporters Sans Frontieres make their list after studying a number of factors – including treatment of journalists, freedom of information legislation and media ownership.

The UK is now ranked 20th – the highest ever position – alongside the United States of America, up a staggering 20 places, and Luxembourg.

Irish journalists are best off, along with their colleagues from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Eritrea is in last position, just behind North Korea.
