Time for trainees to shine in NCTJ Journalism Awards

By Andrew Moorhouse, Head of Journalism Training

I must admit the part of the day I go through my emails is not something I wake up thinking about with anticipation. However, I received a welcome message the other day telling me that it was the time of year when students start to put themselves forward for the annual NCTJ Excellence in Journalism Awards.

I am every bit as excited by this as I was last year. We had somewhat of a bumper year, coming away with no fewer than three awards as well as having multiple nominations in other categories.

This time around I’d like to think we have a chance of repeating this impressive feat. The cream of our crop from over the last year deserve some national recognition for their hard work and we are hoping for big things.

Thanks to our association with press agency Sportsbeat, the sports journalism category is certainly one where we have enjoyed some success with multiple nominations and the two victors last year. This obviously delights us but at the same time, the quality of our output in all the other disciplines is getting better and better and so the name News Associates is now a buzz word for quality and success.

Obviously these awards are very competitive but with the way our results have been improving to unprecedented levels over the past few years, we believe that we can make a habit of being in the running for these highly-prestigious student awards.

It is a real feather in our cap that we can say this and it only goes to show that if you have a talent for journalism, put in the hard work and perhaps get a bit of luck in running when stumbling across stories, then you might find yourself unemployed one moment and a national journalism prize winner the next.

As the Sun’s Football World Cup slogan goes…Believe.
