Sundays with Marie Cartwright and shorthand passages have become as normal as Sky saying that Sundays are Super.
Who needs Arsenal vs. Newcastle when you can take down “Farms can be a dangerous place for children” being read by Marie Cartwright? Besides, writing Wojciech Szczesny in shorthand is a bit of a struggle – try it I dare you!
Taking down what is on television is a good way of keeping your shorthand ticking over. It’s hard to keep up as they are speaking a lot faster than 100 words a minute but it trains the ear and makes the speeds we’re doing seem less daunting.
Christmas is only a few weeks away and it has to be the target to get the 100 before then. The thought of taking down “Rose and Crown to become a business centre” or “Trouble at Station Road flats” while others are drinking mulled wine and enjoying the festive spirit is enough of an incentive.
It is hard to believe that after only nine weeks we are dealing with passages up to 100 words a minute. I am amazed that we are trying to take down passages at this speed so quickly. It really shows the quality of the teaching if this level is reached in what feels like no time at all.
As we head into our tenth week there are some who are taking the 100 exam on Thursday. Good luck to them all.
