Remembering the days when facts really were sacred

By James Toney, Managing Editor

THERE’S an old saying in journalism. If your mother says she loves you, check it out.

However, the demands of the modern newsroom and changes to the sub-editing process, makes the above harder than ever before.

Mistakes happen - we dropped a clanger on my watch this week - but despite the demand for quick stories, first is everything on Google News, and approach were quality and quantity after spar, it’s still important to believe in that mantra that being first and fast means nothing unless you are also right.

The link here - from the iconic New Yorker magazine - harks back to a different day.

Anyone for a time machine?
