Lindsay Watling (London September 2009-January 2010 trainee) and Sam Smith (London March 2010-July 2010 trainee) received awards for outstanding NCE achievement.
Lindsay (now of the Aberdeen Express and Journal) received the TS Murray award, presented annually by the Scottish Society of Editors to the best-performing candidate employed by a Scottish newspaper.
Lindsay was a stand-out trainee, scooping up several awards for excellence during her time at News Associates including the NCTJ annual prize for best shorthand note and transcription at 110-120wmp.
Sam (now of the Brentwood Gazette) received the Society of Editors’ award for the best performance in a news interview exam.
He was praised by examiners for his thorough but polite interview technique.
Sam said: “Naturally I’m delighted to receive the award, if a little surprised. It was a lot of effort preparing for the exams, but it seems to have paid off.”
News Associates Course Director Richard Parsons said: “It is great to see our former trainees are achieving great things in their journalism careers.”
