Don't get sent to Coventry, you can't be a journalist without shorthand

By James Toney, Managing Editor

YESTERDAY I gave a talk to a group of students – all interested in journalism careers – at the University of Leicester.

TEELINE SHORTHAND: You want have a prayer of a career in journalism without it
TEELINE SHORTHAND: You wont have a prayer of a career in journalism without it

They were a bright and enthusiastic bunch. They did their best to look interested as I droned on, gave me the courtesy of the odd laugh at my poor jokes and, encouragingly, asked some good questions.

However, first mention of the importance of shorthand drew a lot of blank expressions.

Although, one clearly clued up student did ask me whether I recommended Teeline or Pitman. Answer: Teeline.

Now read the amusing comment thread on a story about shorthand no longer being offered to aspiring journalists on a course in Coventry.
